The Pandemic Fallout

When COVID-19 initially spread across the world, some were frightened, others were in disbelief, but all had to deal with fallout from the disease. This could be in the form of losing loved ones who became victims of the disease, personal experience with the virus, or lost or damaged businesses.  Now Countries are going back into lock downs and the United States is considering the same action. 

This is an odd virus.  COVID-19 has different symptoms in different people, and in many, it does not even present symptoms.  Symptoms range from loss of smell and taste, to difficulty breathing and vital organ shutdown.  That has been the bad news for all of 2020.  The good news is that regardless of how the virus affects its victims, it seems that regular exercise helps improve the body’s immunity defense to this as well as to other viruses. 

How Exercise May Protect You

Especially for those just getting back into the swing of exercising, the American Cane System broadcasts web sessions of Cane System Techniques and Yoga.  You can get active at your own pace, with gentle martial art workouts that strengthen your body, improve balance, elevate your moods, and aid your body in its fight against viruses and bacterial invasions.    

According to Medlineplus.gov, how exercise increases your immunity to certain illnesses is still unknown and unproven, but there are several theories professionals have advanced.

  1. Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, helping to reduce your risk of getting a cold, flu or other illness.
  2. Exercise actually changes antibodies and white blood cells(WBC).  WBCs are the body’s line of defense that fight off invading viruses.  During and following exercise, the WBCs circulate more quickly, detecting illnesses faster than they would have before.  More research is needed to find out whether these changes prevent infections.
  3. During and immediately following exercise, there is a brief rise in body temperature.  This may prevent bacteria from growing.  The temperature rise may also help the body fight infection better.
  4. Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones.  Because some stress increases the chance of illness, the theory is that lower stress may help your body fight illnesses.

The proven case that “Exercise makes you feel healthier and more energetic. It can help you feel better about yourself.” is just as important as the theories of the physical benefits of regular exercise.

The American Cane System – Safe & Accessible
